Browser Spell Check and Proofreading

schoolboard.net uses the spelling assistance supplied by the web browser and operating system. There is no separate spell-check switch in the Drupal content block or Accordion Agenda editor.

When spell checking is active, the browser normally underlines an unrecognized word while you type in the visual content editor. Right-click or Control-click the word on a computer, or tap it on a mobile device, to review available suggestions.

Spell check is only one review step

Spell check may not identify a correctly spelled but incorrect word, a missing word, or an error in a name, date, time, amount, meeting title, or attachment. Proofread the complete saved agenda before publication.

Google Chrome on a computer

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
  3. Select Languages.
  4. Under Spell check, turn on Check for spelling errors when you type text on web pages.
  5. Confirm that the language used by the district is available and enabled.
  6. Return to the schoolboard.net editing form. Refresh or reopen the form if necessary.

Chrome may offer Basic and Enhanced spell check. Basic spell check uses Chrome or the operating system and does not send the entered text to Google. Enhanced spell check sends entered text to Google for improved suggestions.

Microsoft Edge on a computer

  1. Open Edge.
  2. Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
  3. Select Languages.
  4. Under Writing assistance, turn on the appropriate spelling assistance.
  5. Confirm that the language used by the district is listed under the preferred languages.
  6. Return to the schoolboard.net editing form. Refresh or reopen the form if necessary.

Edge may offer Basic spell check or Microsoft Editor. Basic performs local spell checking on the device. Microsoft Editor sends entered text to a Microsoft cloud service for spelling and grammar processing.

Safari on a Mac

  1. Open Safari and place the cursor in an editable content field.
  2. From the Mac menu bar, select Edit, then Spelling and Grammar.
  3. Confirm that Check Spelling While Typing is selected.
  4. If needed, select Check Grammar With Spelling.
  5. Control-click an underlined word to review suggestions.

To review the Mac's language and automatic-correction settings:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Keyboard.
  3. Under Text Input, select Edit.
  4. Confirm the intended spelling language and correction settings.

iPad and iPhone

Chrome, Edge, and Safari on an iPad or iPhone use the device keyboard's spelling and correction features rather than the desktop browser settings described above.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select General, then Keyboard.
  3. Review Auto-Correction, predictive-text, and keyboard-language settings.
  4. In the schoolboard.net editor, tap an underlined word to review suggestions.

Spelling suggestions depend on the active keyboard language. If the wrong language is active, press and hold the keyboard's globe or Next Keyboard key and choose the intended keyboard.

Use spell check in a Drupal content block

  1. Open the content or agenda for editing.
  2. Work in the normal visual editor, not Source view.
  3. Type or review the content one section at a time.
  4. Review each underlined word before accepting, ignoring, or adding it to the dictionary.
  5. Pay particular attention to district names, people's names, acronyms, policy terms, and meeting terminology.
  6. Save in Draft Mode.
  7. Reopen and proofread the complete saved content in its normal reading view.

Test the setting

In nonconfidential draft content, type an intentionally misspelled test word. If the browser underlines it, remove the test word and continue. Never leave a test word in saved or published content.

Protect private content

Enhanced browser writing services and third-party writing extensions may send entered text to an external cloud service. Follow district policy before using Enhanced Spell Check, Microsoft Editor, Grammarly, or a similar service with private, confidential, student, personnel, attorney-client, or executive-session content. Use local or Basic spell checking when required by district policy.

If spelling suggestions do not appear

Check these items in order:

  1. Confirm that spell checking is enabled in the browser or device settings.
  2. Confirm that the correct language or keyboard is enabled.
  3. Confirm that the cursor is in the normal visual editor rather than Source view.
  4. Type a temporary misspelled word in nonconfidential draft content to test the setting, then remove it.
  5. Refresh or reopen the editing form after changing browser settings.
  6. Save the work before restarting the browser so the content lock is released.
  7. Temporarily disable an approved grammar or writing extension and test with nonconfidential text if extensions may be conflicting.
  8. Ask district technical support whether a managed-browser policy disables spell checking or writing assistance.
  9. Test a normal text field on another approved site. If spell check works there but not in the Drupal editor, record the browser, device, affected field, and expected result and contact schoolboard.net Support.

Do not clear content, recreate an agenda, or change Drupal source markup solely to restore spell checking.
