Accessible Content Authoring Quick Start

Use this shared guide to prepare Word and Google Docs content for publication in schoolboard.net. The goal is clean, structured, readable content that works well on phones, tablets, desktop browsers, and assistive technology.

The online guide is the current and authoritative version. For a focused handout, open the Final Authoring Checklist and select Print this page. The print dialog can also save a PDF. We are considering a prepared accessible PDF for this checklist rather than a duplicate PDF of the complete guide. Reviewer feedback about that approach is welcome.

On an iPad or iPhone, use the browser's Share button in the toolbar, then select Print. The How to print button displays this reminder.

  1. Start with an approved district source document.
  2. Use real heading styles, lists, links, and simple data tables.
  3. Resolve comments, suggestions, tracked changes, and placeholders.
  4. Run the source application's accessibility checker when available.
  5. Move the content into schoolboard.net without carrying unnecessary visual formatting.
  6. Rebuild the content as structured Expandable HTML.
  7. Add meaningful public or private attachments only when needed.
  8. Review the saved content on desktop and mobile.
  9. Verify links, headings, tables, images, and public/private access.

HTML first

Whenever practical, publish the essential information as Expandable HTML. A Word file or PDF may remain available as a supplemental attachment, but it should not be the only way to obtain important public information.
